Lightweight Tent

Most backpackers want a tent that is lightweight, something that will not weight them down. They need a lightweight tent, sleeping bag and the backpack. Many backpackers like the tarp kind of tent. It is extremely easy to fold up and put up.

There are many different styles of a lightweight tent. Some say the best is a tarp, which is the least expensive. The tarp is usually made of silicone and nylon. They weight less than a pound and are very easy to set up. Included will be about six to eight aluminum stakes and if the tarp does not have them, grommets; and a thin cord, this shouldn’t be more than thirty feet long. The grommets keep the tarp from ripping.

The lightweight tent is great for ventilation and to look out at the scenery before you. So many tents are so airtight, moisture can form on the inside and it could actually ‘rain’ inside your tent. Bugs might be a problem with a lightweight tent, if so, carry a mosquito net in the backpack, they do not weigh much.

If the backpacker does not want to use the lightweight tent like a tarp, there are good weights for a three season tent. This one weighs about three to four pounds. And it is easy to set up. If one does not want to backpack, there is a lightweight tent just for their needs.

In the nineteen seventies Euerka! started selling the legendary Timberline Tent. Of the storm shield design, it is self supporting and very lightweight. It was and still is today one of the most popular tents made. This style of lightweight tent has been taken on many famous expeditions including the American Women’s Himalayan Expedition of nineteen seventy eight.

There are many organizations that use a lightweight tent, such as the Red Cross, US Air Force, Army, Navy, the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts; the Department of Forestry and on and on.

There is another style of a lightweight tent that only has a three sided tarp and a rope. You just tie the two ends of the rope around two trees and put the lightweight tent over the rope. This type even has a bottom so you are not actually lying on the ground. You do have a little bit of cover. These are good for kids playing in the back yard or for a family. Just add to it and then you have enough room. Some call this type of lightweight tent a tube pup tent.

The single wall lightweight tent is popular as well as many other styles. This one is about as light as you will find. It does take a bit longer to set up than the others and a little bit heavier but it is still good where weight is a big factor. These are waterproof and are constructed with double walls. These walls are breathable, so no moisture can get in and stay.

Features of a lightweight tent included but are not limited to; they usually have only one pole to erect; they become quite small when packed up; and they come in an array of different colors.
